Electrolytes For Livestock

When I need to give an animal electrolytes this is the recipe I use:

Electrolytes

1 quart of water- boil and let it cool

Dandelion greens and roots- place in the water after it has come to a boil, the herbs will steep as the water cools, strain before mixing with the rest of the ingredients.

1- tablespoon of honey, corn syrup, or molasses

1/2 teaspoon of salt

1 teaspoon of baking soda

Mix all together, except greens,  put in bottle for babies use a large syringe to drench adult animals.

  1. Yes, that is my one and only boy- the youngest with four older sisters. God bless him. He was quite happy to be feeding, but I think the terribly bright flash in the dark barn was a bit much. His face makes me laugh. 🙂

  2. Oh! What a great recipie! I would think honey would work best considering all those great antioxidants in it… Molasses too. Corn syrup I suppose could work in a pinch but it’s better to use the other two I suspect. I wonder if raw sugar would work too? Unprocessed?

  3. I like honey best and molasses like you said, I try to avoid the corn syrup for obvious reasons. I don’t know about the raw sugar, the syrups work well for blending and being easy to go down. However, it would be worth a try and should be better than nothing if that is what you had in a pinch. Animals don’t always have trouble at the times we are most prepared!
